Let's talk about wishes and regrets.
A. Use wish + simple past to talk about regrets in the present.
Example:
l wish l bought a car. It means, l don't have money to buy a car.
B. Use wish with would + simple past to talk about annoyance about certain behaviour done by someone.
Example:
l wish he would give up smoking. It means, l am not happy about his bad behaviour.
C. Use wish with could + simple past to regret about situations that we have no ability to change.
I wish l could speak Chinese. It means l can't speak Chinese.
