Recount Text:
·         Recount text is a piece of hand writing that tells events in a chronological sequence.

·         The purpose of recount text is to inform an account of events in the past.
I went to school at 6.30 this morning

·         Types of recount text
1.Personal recount (retells an event that the writer was personally involved in.)
2.Factual recount (reporting the particular incident by reconstructing factual information)
3.Literary recount (retelling a series of events for the purpose of entertaining)
4.Procedural recount (recording the steps in an investigation or experiment and thereby providing the basis of reporting results or findings)

Generic structure of recount text
  i.      Orientation (presents the background information on who, when, and where of the events.
 ii.      Events/ sequence of events (the events are presented in chronological order)   
iii.  Reorientation (the event starts to end and the writer may provide an opinion of what has happened)
Example:
A Trip to the Zoo

Yesterday my family went to the zoo to see the elephant.
Orientation
When we got to the zoo, we went to the shop to buy some food to give to the animals. After getting the food we went to the nocturnal house where we saw birds and reptiles which only come out at night. Before lunch we went for a ride on the elephant. It was a thrill to ride in it. Dad nearly fell off  when he let go of the rope. During lunch we fed some birds in the park. In the afternoon we saw the animals being fed.



Events
When we returned home we were tired but happy because we had so much fun.

·         Language features of Recount Text

1.      Using sentence connectors :
firstly : pertama, secondly : kedua , thirdly : ketiga, finally : akhirnya, then : kemudian, after that : setelah itu, which : yang mana, when : saat/ketika, during : selama, because or that : oleh karena itu , before : sebelumnya, at the result : hasilnya, so..: maka...

2.      Using  past tense :
·         Simple past tense (to show something that happened in the past)
Examples:
John Cabot sailed to America in 1498.                        My father died last year.
He lived in Fiji in 1976.                                               We crossed the Channel yesterday.


Recount Text 2 : 
The Most Unforgettable Experience in My Life
The most unforgettable experience in my life was a performance with my high school classmates. The performance was created by ourselves. That was first time I tried to choreograph a piece. That also was everyone’s first time to make a performance for our classmates.
At first, we didn’t know how to do it. Then the teacher asked us who wanted to be the choreographer. There were almost seven people who wanted to create pieces. Some people wanted to create two pieces, so we had ten pieces in this performance.
After we decided the choreographer, we started to work with our dancer. I created a solo piece to my best friendA Li. I also created a group piece with A Li. When we worked together, we always had a great time. I think that because we were best friends. We often hadthesameideas.
Meanwhile, I was the dancer in five different pieces. Usually, we worked after school classes. Therefore, we always worked very late. Although everyone felt tired, we didn’t have any complaints.
When the day of performance arrived, every classmate was exciting and felt proud for ourselves. We really made it. After the show, everyone, especially girls, was crying. Because the performance was last time we were dancing together.
Although it has been ten years, Istill remember the performance and every classmates. That was one of my great memories in my life.

Our trip to the Blue Mountain
Orientation
On Friday we went to the Blue Mountains. We stayed at David and Della’s house. It has a big garden with lots of colourful flowers and a tennis court.
Events
On Saturday we saw the Three Sisters and went on the scenic railway. It was scary. Then, Mummy and I went shopping with Della. We went to some antique shops and I tried on some old hats.
On Sunday we went on the Scenic Skyway and it rocked. We saw cockatoos having a shower.
Reorientation
In the afternoon we went home.

On Wednesday, my students and I went to Jogjakarta. We stayed at Dirgahayu hotel which was not far from Malioboro. We would like to field trip in culture city

On Thursday, we visited the tamples in Prambanan. There were three big temples, like Brahma, Syiwa, and Wisnu temples. They were really amazing. We visited only Brahma and Syiwa temples because Wisnu temple was being renovated. On Friday morning, we went to Jogja Palace. We spent about two hours there. We were lucky because we were led by a smart and friendly guide. Then, we continued our journey to Borobudur temple. We arrived there at 3 p.m. at  5 p.m., we heard announcement that Borobudur gate would be closed.

In the evening, we left for Jakarta by Wisata bus. We are very happy because we have learnt about  one of the wonderful heritage of the world.

Contoh Soal Recount Text dan Pembahasannya!
Perhatikan kutipan teks berikut untuk nomor 1-3:

Last Friday, a friend of mine asked me to accompany him to buy a new shirt at a department store. We left home at 03.00 p.m. by motorcycle. As soon as we arrived there, we went to the clothes section.
I let him choose one. An hour later, I got bored watching him confused in choosing a shirt. So I left him and went to the cassette counter. Thirty minutes later, I went back to the clothes section but I couldn’t find him there. My cell phone was broken so I couldn’t call him. I went to the parking area. I saw his motorcycle was there but I couldn’t find him. I waited for him for a few moments then finally I gave up and decided to go home.
When I arrived home, my mother told me that my friend called. She said that he was in the department store looking for me. My mother asked me to come back to the department store. Reluctantly, I walked to the department store and you know what? When I arrived there his motorcycle was not in the parking area. He just went home. I was very tired. There was no other choice, I had to walk home again.
When I arrived home, I was so tired. I was very angry but when I saw my friend’s broad smile greet me in front of the door, I just could not help laughing.

Sebelum membahas mengenai soal tersebut, perlu kiranya kamu mengetahui apa itu recount text. Dalam bahasa Inggris, recount text adalah teks yang menceritakan tentang suatu tindakan atau aktifitas di masa lampau. Tujuan dari recount text ialah untuk memberikan informasi atau menghibur pembaca.
Kembali pada soal, kamu bisa melihat fokus penceritaan teks tersebut ada pada si penulis dan temannya. Hal itu dapat terlihat pada fokus cerita pada paragraf pertama. Pada paragraf tersebut, si penulis mengisahkan pengalamannya berbelanja dengan temannya di pusat perbelanjaan.
Dengan demikian, jawaban yang tepat untuk soal tersebut adalah A.

Soal kedua ini menanyakan tentang salah satu bagian dari cerita dalam teks. Di dalam teks, penulis menceritakan bahwa dia tidak bisa menghubungi temannya. Alasan mengapa si penulis tidak dapat menghubungi temannya ada pada paragraf pertama, tepatnya pada kalimat ‘My cell phone was broken so I couldn’t call him.’
Pada kalimat itu didapatkan informasi bahwa penulis teks tersebut tidak dapat menghubungi temannya karena telepon genggamnya rusak. Dengan demikian, jawaban yang tepat untuk soal tersebut adalah B.

Hal yang ditanyakan pada soal tersebut mengenai topik permasalahan utama dalam teks. Kalau kamu sudah membaca teks tersebut dengan seksama maka kamu akan dengan mudah mendapatkan jawabannya.
Kunci jawaban untuk soal tersebut ada pada bagian yang mengisahkan tentang tidak bisanya penulis menghubungi temannya. Dari situlah terjadi persoalan utama, yakni penulis tidak dapat menemukan temannya di departement store. Jadi, jawaban yang tepat untuk soal tersebut adalah C.

Sebelum menjawabnya, kami  ingin memberitahu kamu tentang macam-macam recount text. Ragam macam recount text , yakni personal recount, factual recount, dan imaginative.
Personal recount yaitu teks yang menceritakan kembali pengalaman si penulis. Factual recount ialah laporan peristiwa yang benar-benar terjadi, seperti laporan kepolisian, percobaan ilmu pengetahuan, dan lain sebagainya. Dan, imaginative recount ialah membuat cerita imajinatif lalu menuliskan peristiwa atau kejadian yang telah dibayangkan.
Kembali pada soal, teks pada soal tersebut termasuk ke dalam jenis personal recount. Sebab, isi teks tersebut menceritakan pengalaman dari penulis. Nah, pertanyaan soal tersebut ialah tentang tujuan dari kutipan teks tersebut.
Untuk menjawabnya, kamu harus membaca teks secara menyeluruh. Kutipan teks tersebut sejatinya menceritakan peristiwa yang telah terjadi secara runtut. Dengan demikian, tujuan dari penulisan teks tersebut ialah menceritakan peristiwa yang telah terjadi. Dari penjabaran itu maka dapat diambil kesimpulan kalau jawaban yang tepat adalah D.

5. Baca kutipan teks berikut dengan seksama!

“I had a terrible day yesterday. First, I woke up an hour late because my alarm clock didn’t go off. Then, I was in such a hurry that I burned my hand when I was making breakfast. After breakfast, I got dressed so quickly that I forgot to wear socks.
Next, I ran out of the house trying to get the 9:30 bus, but of course I missed it. I wanted to take a taxi, but I didn’t have enough money.
Finally, I walked the three miles to my school only to discover that it was Sunday! I hope I never have a day as the one I had yesterday.”

What happened to the writer yesterday?

Soal tersebut menanyakan tentang apa yang terjadi kepada penulis pada hari kemarin. Untuk menjawabnya, kamu harus membaca secara menyeluruh isi teks.
Secara garis besar, teks tersebut menceritakan tentang hari buruk bagi penulis. Hal itu sudah dapat kamu ketahui dari kalimat pertama paragraf pertama, yakni pada kalimat ‘I had a terrible day yesterday.’
Mengenai kejadian buruknya, kamu bisa mendapatkan kunci jawabannya pada runtut peristiwa yang diceritakan oleh penulis. Karena pertanyaannya tentang kejadian apa yang dirasakan oleh penulis di hari kemarin, maka jawabannya harus menggunakan tense lampau. Jadi, jawaban yang tepat untuk soal tersebut ialah E.
